TVA PRASAD SAWAIYYE

Tua Prasad (i). Sawaiyye

Tua Prasad (i). Sawaiyye is one of the bani of daily routine. It is recited after Jap(u) and Jaap Sahib. Thematically this bani has an independent place. It is part of Akal Ustat(i) in Dasam Granth. The number of Sawaiyyas is ten only. There is another set of ten Sawaiyyas in Akal Ustat(i). This set starts with ‘Deenan ki pratipal karey nit sant ubar ganiman garey’. But the ten Sawaiyyas commencing with ‘ Saravag sudh smooh suidhan ke………… are recited during Amrit Sanchar. In dasam Granth, the little of this bani is ‘Tua Prasad(i). Sawaiyyas’. But amongst the Sikhs, this bani also carries the following name:

(a) Tua Prasad(i) Sawaiyye;

(b) Sawaiyyas-Akal Ustat(i) Vidhon;

(c) Sudha (Amrit) Sawaiyye;

(d) Sawaiyye-Patishahi 10.

A study of these Sawaiyyas reveal that all faiths of the world like Jain, Budhism, Jogis, Sanyasi etc. are wandering in doubts. None can reach God Through specific garbs and rituals. After analysing the ideology of all these faiths, Gurdev has reached one conclusion that:

Sri bhagwan ki bhaey kripa hoo te,

Ek rati bin(u) ek ratti ke.

Visiting places of pilgrimage, Jap, tap, dan, nem, sanjam and sitting in contemplation are all purposeless exercises. These cannot lead one to God realisation. Worldly pleasures, luxuries and authorities are all perishable. It must always be remembered that saintly persons will always live life happily and evil doers will be liquidated. All gods and donors will remain in the cycle of birth and death. These deeds will not liberate them from life and death cycle. The only way to achieve emancipation is to be in service of God (Charan Parsana) as Guru Ji advise us:

Je nar sri pat(i) ke pras hain pag

Te nar pher n deh dharalingey.

What is Charan Parsana? It means discarding all means, loving the Lord with true mind. Everything else is trivial when compared to the love of the Lord. So taking us out of all doubts and suspicions, Guru Ji has advised us with the quintessence.

Sach kahori sun lehau sabhai

Jin prem(u) keeo tin hi prabh paio.

In the end he makes a terse comment on the idol worshippers and those who maintain that God resides in East or West directions.

Koor kriya urjhio sabh hi jag(u)

Sri Bhagwan ko bheyd n paio.

The tradition tells us that this composition was also written at Paonta Sahib. The king of Nahan was counselled through this composition. But we have to written proof of establishing the history of this composition.

Quintessence

1. One may gain very high status in life, become very popular and enjoy great authority, yet all these things will remain there and not accompany with him to the world hereafter.

2. Bathing at pilgrimage places, charity, other acts believed to be virtuous, rites and rituals cannot reach one to God.

3. To believe the God resides at a particular place or in a particular direction is totally false.

4. The faith that teaches love with God and tread the path of Simran (meditation actually teaches the right path to the abode of God.

The main aim of a person’s life is to love the Omnipresent and Omnipotent God. This love can develop only through Simran (meditation). No other mean can succeed.i

(composition of the Tenth Master)

Sravag sudh smooh sidhan ke

Dekh(i) phirio ghar jog jat ke.

Meaning of Difficult Words: missionaries of Jain and Bhudhsim; Sudh – keepers of piety ritualistics; Smooh-group multitude; Sidhan-of this Sidhs; Ghar-their seminaries; Jog-Jogi; Jati-ascetics.

I have seen the seminaries of saints and missionaries of Jainsim, Budhsim, ascetics, celebrates etc.

Sur surardan sudh sudhadik,

Sant smooh anek mati ke.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Sur- brave warriors; Surardan- demons; Sudh-pious; Sudhadik-gods who partake Amrit, Sant smooh-group of saints; Anek mati ke- of many other faiths.

I have seen brave warriors, demons and gods who drink amrit only and followers many other faiths.

Sarey hi des ko dekh(i) rahio mat

Kou n dekhiat pranpati ke.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Pranpati-God; master of lives.

I have seen all the faiths but none is that of God, the master of lives.

Sri bhagwan ki bhaey kripa hoo te,

Ek rati bin(u) ek ratti ke.1.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Bhaey- love, devotion; Rati- love, dyed in hue of love; Ratti- small amount.

If devotion and love for the Lord has not appeared in the heart, if His grace has not been bestowed upon, then the validity of all these faiths is insignificant.

Gist

It should be the effort of all faiths of define the path that can lead a seeker to God realisation.

Matey matang jarey jar sang

Anoop uttan surang swarey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Matey-intoxicated; Matang- elephant; Jarey-adored; Jar-gold; Sang-with; Anoop-exemplary; Uttang-tall; Surang-beautiful complexion.

If one has tall, majestic, elephants adorned with gold ornaments and beautiful colours.

Kot(i) turang kurang se koodat

Paon ke gaon ko jat nivarey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Kot(i)-ten millions; Turang-horses; Kurang-deers; Se-like; Paon-breeze, wind; Gaon- speed; Jat nivarey- defeats them.

If one has millions of horses who can leap like deers, and run faster than wind.

Bhari bhujan ke bhoop bhali bidh(i)

Niavat sees n jat bicharey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Bhujan-arms; Bhoop-king; Bhali bidh(i)-in a decent way; N jat bicharey- beyond estimation.

If there are very brave kings who are very famous for their bravery and they have followers beyond estimation.

Etey bhaey tu kaha bhaey bhoopat(i)

Ant ko nangey hi paeyri padharey.2.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Etey-so magnificent; Paeyri- feet; Padharrey- left, went away, depart.

So what if there are magnificent kings? They too depart from this world bare feet.

Quintessence

One may earn as much fame and name in this world; its glory is false. At the end of life, one will go bare handed from here.

Jeet phirai sabh des disan ko

Bajat dohol mridang nagarey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Disan ko- other countries; Mridang- musical instrument of percussion variety like a dholak, Nagara-drum.

If someone has won many countries and his presence at every place is announced through beating of drums, mraidang and other musical instruments.

Gunjat goorh gajan ke sunder

Hinsat hain hiyaraj hajarey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Gunjat-are echoing; Goorh-groups; Gajan ke-elephants; Hinsat-braying; Hiya-horses; Hiyaraj-horses of good bread.

They may have magnificent elephants and horses of decent breed braying in their stable.

Bhoot bhavikh bhavan ke bhoopat(i)

Kaon(u) ganai nahin jat bicharey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Bhoot-past; Bhavikh-future time; Bhava-present time; Bhoopati(i)-kings.

If many glorious kings had lived in the past that no one can keep an account of them nor can arrive at an approximate estimate. May there be many more such kings in the present time and future too.

Sirpat(i) sri bhagwan bhajey bin(u)

Ant kao ant ked ham sidharey.3.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Sripat(i)-master of Maya, God; Ant-death; Dham-house; Sidharey-leave for.

Without meditation on the name of master of maya that is God; these kings too leave for the house of death. In other words they too die leaving their glory behind in this world.

Teerath nahan daya dum dan

Su snjam nem anek bisekhai.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Teerath nahan-bathing at places of pilgrimage; Dum-to keep the mind away from vices; Sanjam-to remain in discipline; Bisekhai-specially; Nem-Means way.

If a man goes and bathe at holy places, showers compassion on living beings, makes every effort to abstain mind from indulging in vices, makes much charity and adopts such other special means to control and discipline his mind.

Beyd Puran Kateb Quran

Jameen Jaman saban ke pekhai.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Beyd Puran Kateb Quran- four holy books of western religious; Jaman- period, time; Pekhai- seen, read.

If one reads all the religious books of western religion; if he reads/studied all the religious scriptures of all the time.

Paon ahar jati jatdhar

Sabai su bichar hazaar ke dekhai.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Ahar-food; Paon ahar- living on air; Hazaar ke- many thousand.

If someone lives on air for his survival, leads a celebate life, and think of many more such means of living.

Sri bhagwan bhajey bin(u) boopat(i)

Ek rati bin(u) ek na lekhai.4.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Ek na lekhai- worthless, not in any count.

Even then, all his means are worthless without love and remembrance of Master of cosmos.

Quintessence

If one has not developed true and genuine love for God, then all means like bathing at holy places, reading of holy books, living life of a celebate and practicing strenuous penances are futile.

Sudh sipah durant dubah

Su saj(i) snah durjan dalaingey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Sudh- proved, established; Sipah- soldiers; Dubah-who are difficult to contain; Snah- armour; Dalaingey- enemies.

Established and proven brave soldiers who are invincible, whose sword attacks cannot be defeated and who wear armour on their bodies, destroy the enemy.

Bhari guman bharey man main

Kar parbat pankh haley n halaingey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Pankh-feather; Kar Pankh-with feathers fixed.

Those who are filled with pride that the mountains may have feathers attaced to them and move away but they will not budge an inch from their stance in the battlefield.

Tor(i) areen maror(i) mavasan

Matey matangan(i) man malaingey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Tor(i)-breathing; Areen-enemies; Maror(i)- by twisting wringing; Mavasan-rebellions; Matang-elephant; Matey matangan(i) man-pride and arrogance of the intoxicated elephants; Malaingey- break.

Those who can break the pride, the arrogance of the intoxicated elephants; their enemies and even twist the necks of the rebellious elements.

Sri pat(i) sri bhagwan kripa bin(u)

Tiag(i) jahan nidan challaingey.5.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Nidan-at last; Sripat(i)-God, master of maya.

Such brave warriors also have this world without achieving and obtaining the grace of the Lord.

Quintessence

Warriors may have earned fame for their bravery and courage, but without Gods worship, they cannot please Him. The depart from this world empty handed.

Beer apar badey bariar

Abichareh sar ki dhar bhachhaiya.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Beer-brave men; Apar-many; Bariar-powerful, strong ; Abichareh-carelessly, casually; Sar-weapons made of iron; Bhachhaiya-bear the attack.

The brave and strong warriors of great courage who can bear the attacks of weapons made of iron and steel.

Torat des malind mavasan

Matey gajan ke man mallaiyya.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Torat-breakers, winners; Malind-who seek surrender; Mavasan-defiant; mutinous; Malaiyya-breakers.

If someone wins many countries, overpower the defiants and mutinous and even break the arrogance of intoxicated elephants.

Garheh garhahh ko torhanhar

Su batan hi(n) chak char lavaiyya.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Garheh-strong, powerful; Garhahn-forts; Batan hi(u)-by mere talk; Chak char-all four directions; Lavaiyya-occupiers.

Those who can break strong and powerful forts and by their strong words make the world surrender to their orders.

Sahib sri sabh ko sirnaik

Jachak anek sue k deivaiyya.6.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Sahib sri-God; Naik-master; Jachak-beggers, seekers; Divaiyya-donor, giver, provider.

Many such people are beggers at lords door. He alone is the provider to them, who is the Master of Maya and also the master of all living and nonliving beings.

Quintessence

The great warriors who have the capabilities of overpowering great brave warriors, surmount strong forts, bearer of attacks of weapons on their body may seem brave in the world but are no better than beggars at the door of Almighty.

Danav dev phanind nisachar

Bhoot bhavikh bhavan japaingey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Danav-demon; Phanind-king of the hooded serpents; Nisachar-ghosts and souls who wander by night; Japaingey-remember.

Demons, ghosts, evil souls who roam about at night and king of hooded serpents worship God.

Jeev Jitey jal main thal main

Pal hi pal main sabh thap thapaingey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Jitey-as many as; Main-in; Thap thapaingey-creates.

All the living beings of this Universe whether on the ground in the water; He can create them in no time.

Pun pratapan badh jait dhun

Papan ke bauh punj khapaingey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Punn-virtuous deeds; Pratapan-glory, splendour; Punj-heaps; Jait dhun-Sound of glory and salutation; Badh-increase. Khapaingey-are destroyed.

Virtuous deeds earn glory and salutation while heaps of ill deeds done in the past are destroyed.

Sah smooh prasann phirain jag

Satr sabhai avlok chapaingey.7.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Satr-enemy, who ill treat virtuous people; Avlok-seeing get suppressed seeing them.

Quintessence

Those who meditate on the name of the Lord earn praise and glory in the world. All their sins are destroyed and they stay happily in the world.

Manav indr Gajindra naradhap

Jaun trilok ko raj karaingey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Manav-men; Indr-kings; Manav Indr-king of the people; Naradhap-protectors of mankind; Jaun-who; Trilok-in entire Universe.

Those who become mighty kings and won many powerful elephants and reign over the entire Universe.

Kot(i) isnan gajadik dan

Anek suamber saj baraingey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Isnan-bathing at sacred places; Gajadik-elephants etc; Suamber-selection of spouce by oneself; Baraingey-solemnise marriage.

Those who bathe at countless holy places and give elephants and such like items in charity, they solemnise marriages by selecting or winning their own spouces.

Brahm Mahesar Bisan Sachipat(i)

Ant phasey jam phas paraingey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Sachipat(i)-husband of Sachi, Inder; Jam Phas-in the clutches of death.

What to speak of these important and great people, even Brahma, Vishnu, Shiv and Indra also are caught in the clutches of death.

Je nar sripat(i) ke pras hain pag

Te nar pher n deh dharaingey.8.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Je nar-those men; Pras hain-touch; N deh dharaingey-will not be born again and again.

Those men who attach themselves with holy feet of the Lord (who worship God), are not put in to the cycle of birth and rebirth.

Quintessence

Luxuries of kingdom, bathing at holy places and acts of charity, acquiring the status of Gods, none of these can save a living being from the clutches of death if he is bereft of Lords worship.

Kaha bhaio jo dou lochan moond kai

Baith(i) rahio bak dhian lagaio.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Kaha bhaio-so what; Jo-it; Dou lochan-both eyes; Moond kai-closed; Bak dhian-concentration of a heron.

So what if someone closes his eyes and sit in concentration like a heron? It gives no benefit to anyone.

Nahat phirio liey sat samundran(i)

Lok gaio parlok gavaio.

If a person visits all the sacred places for ritual of bating across the seven seas then he has not only lost this world but even the world hereafter. He would remain bereft of all comforts and peace in the world hereafter without true worship of the Lord.

Bas kio bikhian so baith kai

Aisey hi aisey su bais bitaio.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Bas-reside; Kio-did; Bikhian so-with interest in vices; Aisey hi aisey-uselessly. Bais-spent his life.

A person who had spent all his life enjoying the luxuries of life and indulged in fun and frolic, had spent his life uselessly.

Sach kahon sun lehu sabhai

Jin prem kio tin hi Prabh paio.9.

Listen O Ye all! I am telling the truth. Whosever has loved the Lord, he alone has realised God.

God cannot be realised either by heron like concentration or bathing at the places of pilgrimages, the object of life is not spending life in enjoyment of luxuries, fun and frolic’s. Learn to love God. Only love can reach one to God.

Kahoo lai pahan pooj dhario sir

Kahoo lai ling garey tatkaio.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Kahoo-someone; Pahan-stone; Pooj dhario sir-kept on the head after worshipping; Ling-Shivling, Phallus of Shiv; Garey-around the neck.

Someone has worshipped stone idol and bowed before it. Some other person has worn Shivling around his neck.

Kahoo lakhio Her(i) avachi disa meh

Kahoo pachhan ko sees(u) nivaio.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Lakhio-seen, understood and known; Avachi disa-Southward, where Krishan Ji resides (Dawarka); Pachhan ko-West ward.

Some one (Hindus) have understood and propagated that God resides southward (in Dawarka). Muslims have believed that God resides in Kabaa and therefore they bow their heads towards west.

Kou butan ko poojat hai pasu

Kou mritan ko poojan dhaio.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Kou-someone; Butan-idols; Pasu-animals, foolish; Mritan-graves.

Some foolish persons worship stone idols considering them to be God while others have been running to worship the graves and dead people.

Koor kriya urjhio sabh hi jag,

Sri Bhagwan ko bheyd(u) n paio.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Koor-false; Kriya-actions; Urjhio-involved; Sri Bhagwan-God.

The whole world seems to be involved in false rites, rituals and customs. No one has really found the secret of God.

Quintessence

One cannot realise and know God by worshipping idols, graves, bowing their head towards South or West believing God to be residing in these directions.

Tua – Yours; Prasad(i) – By Thine kindness.

O Lord ! by thine grace I recite this composition.

Pranavo ad(i) ekankara.

Jal(i) thal(i) mahial kio pasara.

Ad(i) purakh(u) abigat(u) abinasi.

Lok chaturdas jot(i) pragasi.1.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Pranvao-I bow before you, I salute you; Ad(i)-source, who is the source of the cosmos, creator of the cosmos; Ekankara-One God who is oni-present; Thal(i)-in the earth; Mahial – in the sky, above the Earth; Pasara – expanse; Purakh(u) – who is present in every living being; Abigat(u) – who is not visible with the eyes; Chaturdas – four plus ten; Lok- regions; Prakasi-has illuminated.

I bow before the one omnipresent Lord who has created the whole cosmos. He has made his presence felt on the earth in the water and in the sky. I salute the God who is the cause/source of the entire cosmos, who is present in all the living being. He is not visible to us by these eyes. He is indestructible and who has illumined all the fourteen regions with His light.

Hast(i) keet ke beech samana.

Rav runk jeh ik sar jana.

Advai alakh(u) purakh(u) abigami.

Sabh ghat ghat ke antarjami.2.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Hast(i)-elephant; Keet-insect; worm; Rav-rich; Runk-pauper; Jeh-the God who; Ik sar-equal, uniformly; Jana-has known; Advai-whose traits cannot be described; Abigami-inseparable, cannot be removed; Antarjami-knower of the hearts, inner feelings; Ghat ghat ke-everyone’s heart.

I bow before God who resides in elephant and a worm equally, who has associated Himself with rich and poor equally. There is no one else like Him. Whose all this traits cannot be described, who is present in all the living beings and who cannot be separated from them. He reaches the mind of every one.

Alakh roop achhai un bhekha.

Raag rung jeh roop n rekha.

Barn chihan sabh hoon te niara.

Ad(i) purakh advai abikara.3.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Alakh-beyond description; Achhai-indestructible; Bhekha-disguise; Jeh-who; Raag rung- in the hue of attachment; Rekha-lines, sings; Roop rekha-the form and symbols; Barn-the four castes of Hindusim; Niara-different, unique, distinct; Abikara-changeless, whose behaviour does not change.

I salute the God whose form cannot be described even remotely who is indestructible, who is not enamoured by any particular disguise or religious attire, who is never dyed in the hue of attachment, and whose form and shape cannot be stated.

I salute the God who is distinct from the castes like Brahmin, Khatris, etc., who is the creator of the entire cosmos, who is present in all the living beings. There is no one like Him and whose attitude never changes.

Barn chihan jeh jat n pata

Sattr mittr jeh tat n mata.

Sabh te door(i) sabhan to near.

Jal(i) thal(i) mahial(i) jahey basera.4.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Chihan-symbol; Jeh-whose; Pata-clan, dynasty; Sattr-enemy; Tat-father; Mahial(i)-in the sky; Jahey-whose; Basera-abode.

I bow my head before that Lord who is without any symbol or sign of being a Brahmin or a Khatri, who has no friend or foe, who has no father or mother.

I salute that Master Lord who is different than all the living being and yet He is with them. Lord who resides in water on land and in the sky.

Anhad roop anahad bani.

Charn sarn jeh bast bhavani.

Brahma Bisan ant(u) nahi paio.

Net(i) net(i) mukh char bataio.5.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Anhad-all pervading, omnipresent; Bani-way of life; Anhad bani-whose way of life is uniform at all time; Jeh charn sarn-in whose refuge; Bhavani-goddess Durga; Net(i)-not like this; Muk hchar-who has four faces, Brahma, Bataio-said.

I bow may head before that Lord whose existence is all pervading in the whole world, whose way of life is uniform at all times and places. Even goddess Durga takes refuge in His abode.

I salute the Lord whose traits could not even be known by Brahma and Vishnu, about whom Brahma has said that there is no one like Him, there is no one like him.

Kot(i) inder Upinder banaey.

Brahma rudr upaey khapaey.

Lok chaturdas khel(u) rachaio.

Bahur(i) ap hi beech milaio. 6.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Upinder-fifth incarnation of Vishnu, He is called Vaman, He was the younger brother of Indra; Rudr-Shiv; Bahur(i)-again; Ap hi Beech-within oneself.

I bow before the Lord who has not only produced One but many gods like Indra and incarnations like Vaman; who creates millions of Shiv and Brahma and destroys them.

I salute the Master who has created a spectacles of fourteen regions; and he absorbs them into Himself whenever h so desires.

Danav dev phanind apara.

Gandharb jachh rachey subhchara.

Bhoot bhavikh bhavan kahani.

Ghat ghat ke pat pat ki jani.7.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Danav-demon; Phanind-king of the hooded serpents; Apara-whose end cannot be found; Gandharb-minstrels of the gods; Jachh-smaller gods who are considered to be the slaves of God of wealth-Kubaer; Subhchara-pious and moral person; Bhavan-present time; Kahani-event, episode; Pat-curtain.

I bow before the God who has created countless demon, gods kings of hooded serpents, who created innumerable minstrels of gods and noble souls.

I salute the Lord who has started the past episode, who is creating stories of the present time and who is going to commence episodes of the future. He who knows the mind of everyone and can even know the latents of their mind.

In other words, He is capable of producing countless Sheshnags, and whatever has happened, is happening and will happen is all done by Him.

Tat mat jeh jat(i) n pata.

Ek rung kahoo nahi rata.

Sarb jot(i) ke beech samana.

Sabhoonh sarb thour pehchana.8.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Tat-father; Jeh-of the God; Pata-dynasty, family linage; Ek rung kahoo nahi-does not belong to any one caste; Jot(i)-living being; Sabhoonh-in all; Sarb thour-in every place.

I bow my head before that God; who has no mother; no father; has no caste and belongs to no family lineage. He who is not in love with any one caste or dynasty.

I salute the Lord who is present in all the living beings and I see Him in all and everywhere.

Kal rehat ankai saroopa.

Alakh purakh(u) abigat avdhoota.

Jat(i) pat(i) jih chihan n barna.

Abigat dev achhai an bharma.9.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Kal-time, death; Ankal-who is not affected by time; Ankal Saroopa-whose existence is free of death; Alakh-whose virtues cannot be counted; Abigat(u)-invisible; Avdhoot-who has ended attachment with maya; Achahai-imperishable; An bharma-beyond; Abigat-without body.

I bow my head before that Lord who is without death, whose existence is beyond time, whose virtues cannot be counted; who is present in all living beings. He who is invisible with these eyes and is free of attachment with maya.

I salute that Lord who has no caste and family lineage, who has no definite form and belongs to no section of society. He who is a god with body like Vishnu and Brahma; who never dies and is above the attraction and wanderings of maya.

Sach ko kal sabhan ko karta.

Rog sog dokhan ko harta.

Ek chit jeh ik chin dhiaio.

Kal phas ke beech n aio.10.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Sog-worry; Dokh-vices, sins; Harta-destroyer; Ek chit-with singular mind, with concentration; Phas-noose.

I supplicate before that Lord who is the creator of the living beings and is also their destroyer, who is capable of destroying ailments and vices of all the living being.

Whoever has remembered Him with singular and concentrated mind even for a second, he escapes from the fear of death.
