JAAP(U) SAHIB

JAAP(U) SAHIB

Jaap(u) Sahib is the composition of Guru Gobind Singh. Amritdhari Sikhs recite this composition daily in the ambrosial hours of the morning. Traditionally this composition is read / recited after Jap(u) Bani during the administration of Amrit (Baptism ceremony). Even in the Code of Conduct (Rehatnamas), Sikhs have been strictly advised to receipt both Jap(u) and Jaap(u) Sahib every morning :

Jap(u) Jaap(u) parhey bina jo jevai prasad.

So vista ka krim hoey janam gavavai bad.

(Rehatnama Bhai Desa Singh)

As it is convenient to memorise Jap(u) Bani, it is equally difficult to remember Jaap(u) Sahib since many words from Braj, Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian languages have been used. Repeated use of one word in different verses often confuse a person particularly, who may be trying to remember the Bani. Thus many Sikhs slip in their efforts of remembering/memorizing the Bani. Therefore concentration of mind is of utmost importance while reciting this Bani.

Where and When was it composed?

Guru Gobind Singh Ji stayed in Nahan state for three years from 1684 to 1987. During this period, he composed this Bani alongwith Sawaiyyas and Akal Ustat at a picturesque place called Paonta, located on the bank of river Yamuna. So when in 1699, the event of administering Amrit to the Sikhs took place, many Sikhs had already committed this Bani to memory. Thus many Sikhs were available to recite these Banis at the administration of Amrit.

Variations and Changes in the Words

The volume of Dasam Granth was prepared after the demise of the Tenth Master. Thus many writers had changed the spellings of the words according to their intelligence and practice of recitation. This had caused damage to the uniformity of the words. This is evident from the hand books of prayers (Gutka) published at various time by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. Therefore, it is clear that we do not hold an authentic version free from all mistakes of this Bani that can be used for comparison and correction. The central Sikh bodies must entrust this task to selected scholars and get an authentic version of Jaap(u) Sahib ready in order to bring uniformity in the text.

OVERALL THEME OF JAAP(U) SAHIB

1. The real form of God can neither be explained in words by anyone nor can any sacred/religious book describe it.

2. No sketch or picture of the Lord can be made because He does not posses body, like living beings of this world. Thus no idol can be made of Him nor can He be installed in a temple like idols of gods or goddesses. His form is not constituted of the five elements by which the world has been created. Therefore He cannot be pleased or propitiated through the sacrifice of any living being born of these five elements. In order to meet Him, there is no need to indulge in religious rites and customs nor adhere to Varan Asharam essentialities. He is love and demands love alone.

3. All means of creations in the Universe are in His hands but He does not have to make specific efforts to create anything in this Universe. He has formulated infallible laws and rules which no one can oppose or refute. He is carrying out the task of sustenance of the world with such finesse that it virtually act as a role model for living beings.

4. God is like a proclaimer who has assembled the worldly fair through sound of drums. He himself is a great and bewitching being. However one experiences two diametrically opposite temperaments in this world. In fact it is His grandeur and elegance. He Himself is both loving and terrifying form.

5. After creation of the Universe, He did not sit in a secluded place away from it. He is present in all and yet has maintained His distinctness. He is speaking in all and He Himself is hearing what He is speaking. Despite being present in all good and bad people, he is light and pure light, love and only love. Significantly, the crea ions of the Universe gets created and destroyed, but He never perishes.

6. There is no end to the praises of the Lord. whenever wise people come to know His various deeds, they name Him in His new form. In short, we can say that He is the creator, the sustainer and destroyer of the Universe He is so magnanimous in His sustainence that He never stops anyone’s livelihood out of ire for their bad deeds. He loves everyone for ever.
