General Information

The Rahras(i) bani is one of the daily routine banis of a Gursikh. According to the Sikh Rehat Maryada this bani is to be recited in the evening after sun set.

Why is it Recited in the Evening?

The language and essence of the hymns of Rahras(i) are so clear, easy and full of meaning that it can easily be understood by a person tired after days hard work to derive adequate spiritual benefit. The simplicity of the theme enables a person to concentrate his mind easily.

The size of Sohila bani is even smaller as it is difficult to maintain and acquire concentration of mind in a long composition.

How did the Name Come About?

No written proof is available. There is a genera conjecture that name has been selected from the following line appearing in one of the hymns of this composition.

Gurmat(i) nam(u) mera pran sakhai,

Her(i) kirat(i) hamri rahras(i).

The word Rahras(i) has many meanings. Salutation, request, code of conduct, tradition, items for use on the journey etc. are some of the meanings. Perhaps this name was not prevalent at the times of Guru Arjan Dev Ji otherwise the index of Ad(i) Grant would have borne the heading Rahras(i) in pace of So-dar(u) which is the name of first hymn of this bani. Even if this name was adopted immediately after the compilation of Sri Ad(i) Granth, Bhai Gurdas Ji would have confirmed it then, but from the compositions of Bhai Gurdas Ji, it is reaffirmed that the name of the bani was So-dur(u) only. In one of his Vaar, he says:

Sanjhai So-dar(u) gaviai, man meli kar mel milandai.

Historical reserach reveal that the name Rahras(i) was prevalent at the time of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, because Bhai Nand Lal Singh Ji, a close and near Sikh of Guru Sahib has used this word. He says:

Bin Rahras(i) sama(n) jo khovai.

With the change coming in its title, this bani is now famous as So-dar(u) Rahras(i).

The Structure of Rahras(i)

The accepted Sikh Rehat Maryada first published by Shiromani Gurudawara Prabandhak Committee, Amritsar in 1945 has given the following structure of Rahras(i) bani and the same is discussed in this booklet.

(a) Nine hymns of Sri Guru Granth Sahib on page 8 starting with So-dar(u) to Sarn(i) parey ki rakhauh sarma on page 12.

(b) Kabiobach Benti Chaupaee Patishahi 10 (Hamri karo hath de to Dusht dokh te lehauh bachai.)

(c) Sawaiyya: Paey gahay jab te tumrey.

(d) Dohra: Sagal duar kao chhad(i) kai.

(e) Anand Sahib : First five Pauris and the last Pauri.

(f) Mundavani Slok : Thal vich(i) tin vastu………

(g) Slok Mahalla 5 : Tera kita jato nahi.

All other versions where some hymns are read in the beginning, in between or at the end are not authentic. Many seminaries had adopted their own traditions which have been taken up other Sikhs. No objection / observation can be raised since most of it is Gurbani and reading of Gurbani is welcome. However, for uniformity of the Panth, we should follow what has been propagated by our supreme religious body.

So dar(i), Raag(u) Asa, Mahalla-I

Ik Oankar Sat(i)gur Prasad(i).

So dar(u) tera keha, so ghar(i) keha,

jit(u) beh(i) sarb smaley.

Vajey terey nad anek asankha, ketey terey vavan harey.

Ketey terey rag pari sio kahieh ketey terey gavan harey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Keha : what is it like?, very wondrous; Dar(u) : the door; Jit(u) : where; Beh(i) : sit; Sarb : all living beings; Samaley : Thou look after; Nad : mode of singing ; Vavanharey : players of musical instruments ; Pari sio : along with fairy minstrels ; Kahieh : are said.

What is it like that house indeed (must be wonderful) where You sit and take care of all the living beings. In this creation of Yours, there are innumerous modes of singing and musical instruments. There are infinite number of living beings who are playing them. Besides the Raags (modes of singing) there are countless Raagnis (female version of Ragg) and the celestial minstrels are singing your praises in all these Raags and Raagnis.

Gavan(i) tudhno pavan(u) pani baisantar(u),

gavai Raja dharm duarey.

Gavan(i) tudhno chit(u) gupt(u) likh(i) janan(i)

likh(i) likh(i) dharm(u) bicharey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Gavan(i) : Sing; Baisantar : fire; Raja dharm : Dharmraj, (the god incharge who dispenses justice based on good and bad deeds of a person); Duarey : O Lord at Your door; Chit(u) Gupt(i) : The god who keeps an account of all good and bad deeds of a person (this is a belief of Hinduism); Likh(i) janan(i) : know how to write; Likh(i) likh(i) : write all the time.

O Lord! All the elements like air, water, etc. created by You are also singing Your praises. Dharm Raj is also singing Your paeans at Your door. Even Chitragupt who records the deeds of all living being is singing your glory at Your door.

Gavan(i) tudhno Isar(u) Brahma Devi,

sohan(i) terey sada swarey.

Gavan(i) tudhno Indr Indrasan(i) baithey,

devatia dar(i) naley.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Isar(u) : Shiv Ji; Brahma : good Brahman; Devi : goddess; Sohan(i) : befit; Indrasan(i) : on the throne of Indra; Devatia naley : along with all the gods.

O Lord! Countless goddesses, Shiv, Brahma and other gods created by You are ever singing and adoring your court. Many Indras are singing sitting on their thrones. Many gods in his attendance are also singing your adultations.

Gavan(i) tudhno sidh smadhi andar(i)

gavan(i) tudhno sadh bicharey.

Gavan(i) tidhno jati sati santokhi,

gavan(i) tudhno veer kararey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Smadhi andar(i) : in contemplation of mind; Sidh(i) : those engrossed in Yogas; Bicharey : reflect on; Jati : who exercise celibacy; Sati : donors; Veer : brave warriors; Kararey : adept.

O Lord! Sidhs are singing your praises in their contemplation. Those who have disciplined their mind are singing Your praises after reflecting upon Your qualities. Those exercising celibacy and donors are also singing Your glory. The countless adept and brave warriors are singing Your adulations.

Gavan(i) tudhno pandit parhn(i) rakhisur,

jug(u) jug(u) veda(n) naley.

Gavan(i) tudhno mohania man(u) mohan(i),

surg(u) mach(u) pialey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Parhn(i) : read; Rakhisur : sages; Jug(u) jug(u) : in every era; Veda(n) naley : including Vedas; Mohania : pretty women; Man(u) mohan(i) : who enamour the minds; Machh(u) : this world; Pialey : nether regions.

O Lord! great sages and learned people are singing your praises. All the pretty women of heaven, Earth and nether region who enamour a man’s mind are singing Your glory.

Gavan(i) tudhno rattan upaey terey

athsath(i) tirath naley.

Gavan(i) tudhno jodh mahabal sura

gavan(i) tudhno khani charey.

Gavan(i) tudhno khand mandal brahmanda

kar(i) kar(i) rakhey terey dharey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Upaey terey : created by You; Jodh : warriors; Mahabal : brave an powerful soldiers; Khani charey : all four system of life generation; Khand : a part of the Universe; Mandal : galaxy, Brahmanda : the entire cosmos; Kar(i) kar(i) : after creating; Dharey : placed.

O Lord! all the jewels are singing Your praises alongwith the sixty eight holy places where You are believed to be present according to Hindu mythology. The brave soldiers and great warriors display the power given by You and are singing Your eulogies of Your might. All the creations of the four system of creations are singing Your praises. The entire cosmos, the galaxies in the cosmos and all the parts of Universe like Earth are also singing Your praises.

Sei tudhno gavan(i) jo tudh(u) bhavan(i)

rattey terey bhagat rasaley.

Hor(i) ketey tudhno gavan(i) se mai(n) chit(i) n avan(i),

Nanak kia bicharey.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Sei : those persons; Tudh(u) bhavan(i) : are liked by You; Rattey : engrossed in Your love; Rasaley : the relishers; Hor(i) ketey : many more; Mai(n) chit(i) n avan(i) : do not come to my mind, I can’t count; Kia bicharey : what can I reflect / contemplate.

O Lord! only those sing Your laudations who enjoy your favour, who are completely drenched in Your love and are Your devoted Bhagats who savour in Your will, command and all Your deeds. There are countless others who sing Your praises but I cannot even count them. What can Nanak say about their number?

Soi soi sada(u), sahib(u) sacha, sachi nai.

Hai bhi, hosi, jaey n jasi, rachna jin(i) rachai.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sach(u) : ever stable; Nai : praise; Hosi : will happen, will stay firm; Jaey n : is not born; N jasi : not die; Rachai : who has created.

The Lord who has created this cosmos; is present every where even now. He is ever stable and He is the Master of all. His glorification is eternal.

Rangi rangi bhati kar(i) kar(i) jinsi maya jin(i) upai.

Kar(i) kar(i) dekhai kita apna, jio tisdi vadiai.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Rangi rangi : of many colours, Bhati : of various kind; Jinsi : of various species; Jin(i) : the God who, Upai : had created; Kar(i) kar(i) : having created; Dekhai : is looking after; Kita apna : His own creations; Jio : Vadiai : will.

The God who has created maya and many kind of species, is looking after and sustaining His creation according to His will.

Jo tis(u) bhavai soi karsi phir(i) hukam(u) n karma jai.

So patisah(u) saha pat(i) sahib(u),

Nanak rahan(u) rajai.1.

Meaning of Difficult Words: Tis(u) bhavai : sa He likes; Karsi : will do; N karna jai : cannot be done; Saha pat(i) sahib(u) : Emperor of the emperors, the Master; Rahan : behoves.

Whatever the Lord likes, He does. No one can show his arrogance before Him. No one can command Him to do in any other way. He is the Emperor of the whole Universe, He is the Emperor of the Emperor. Hey Nanak! It behoves the living beings to stay and live in His will.

Import : Air, water and fire, etc. are also busy singing and saying Lords praises. it means all the elements created by Him are operating in His will. To remain His command is to say His approbations.

Asa Mahalla – 1

Sun(i) vada akhai sabh(u) koey.

Kevad(u) vada ditha hoey.

Kimat(i) paey n kahia jaey.

Kahnai valey terey rahey samaey.1

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sun(i) : by hearing; Sabh(u) koey : every one; Kevad(u) : how big; Ditha : only after seeing; Hoey : can be described; Kimat(i) paey n : cannot be evaluated, No one is equal to Him; Rahey samaey : are absorbed in Him.

Everyone is hearing from others and saying that He is mighty. How great You are, how inaccessible You are can only be stated on seeing You. In other words, unless You are seen, no one can tell how great You are. Your form cannot be described. Those who say Your praises get so engrossed that they forget their own existence.

Vadey merey sahiba gehar gambhira guni gahira.

Koey n janai tera kevad(u) chira.1. Rahao.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Gehar : deep, unfathomable; Gambhira : of mighty heart and courage; Guni gahira : of infinite traits; Chira : Your expanse.

O my Great Master! You are like an unfathomable ocean. You are Great of heart and courage. No living being knows how vast in Your expanse.

Sabh(i) surti mil(i) surt(i) kamai.

Sabh kimat(i) mil(i) kimat(i) pai.

Giani dhiani gur gur hai.

Kahan(u) n jai teri til(u) vadiai.2.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sabh(i) mil(i) : all put together, with each others assistance; Surti surt(i) kamai : sat repeatedly in spiritual absorption; Giani : of higher wisdom, knowledgeable; Dhiani : who focus their minds; Gur : great; Gur hai : many other great; Til(u) : not even equal to a sesame seed.

How mighty are You! many sages have sat in long and repeated spiritual absorption, many Jogis have attempted to assess it by focusing their mind and did this repeatedly. Many great and noble philosophers have put their mind together to device means to find anything as big or good as You but they could not find even a sesame seed like equivalent of Your greatness.

Sabh(i) sat, sabh(i) tap, sabh changiaia.

Sidha purkha kia vadiaia.

Tudh(u) vin(u) sidhi kinai n paia.

Karm(i) milai nahi thak(i) rahaia.3.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sabh(i) sat : all noble deeds; Tap : penances; Changiaia : good traits; Sidh : who have made a success of their lives; Sidhi : success; Karm(i) : by Your blessings; Thak(i) : prohibiting others.

What to speak of philosophers, wise scholars or Sidh, Jogis, no one has been able to estimate Your greatness. But no Sidh, scholars, philosophers and all the great and noble deeds of the philanthropist had been possible without Your grace and kindness. Who ever has achieved success has obtained by Your kindness. No one could impede his progress who enjoyed Your kindness.

Akhan wala kia vechara. Sifti bharey terey bhandhara.

Jis(u) tu deh(i) tisai kia chara. Nanak sach(u) swaran hara.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sifti : With innumerable qualities; Chara : what power or authority.

O Lord! Your treasure house is filled with Your traits. What strength does an ordinary mortal has that he can describe Your traits? Whom so ever You bless with the ability to sing Your praises, no one can then impede his progress. You grant him all the successes in life. Hey Nanak! say that You are eternal and You are the reasons of that fortunate person to succeed in life.

Asa Mahalla – 1

Akha(n) jiva(n) visarai mar(i) jao(n).

Akhan(i) aukha sacha nao(n).

Sachey nam ki lagai bhookh.

Ut(u) bhookhai, khaey chalieh dukh.1.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Akha(n) : When I utter Lords name; Jiva(n) : I experience spiritual lie; Mar(i) jao(n) : my spiritual life comes to an end because of vices; Sacha : ever living, eternal, Ut(u) bhookhai : because of that hunger; Khaey : with the meal of Lord’s name; Chalieh : are removed.

As I meditate on Lord’s name, I feel life generating in me. But when I forget His name, my spiritual life ends. Despite knowing this fact, meditating on His name seems a difficult task. He who develops a longing for the Simran of the eternal Lord’s name in his mind, all his distresses vanish after he has consumed the spiritual life saving food of Nam Simran.

So kio(n) visrai, meri maey

Sacha sahib(u) sachai naey.1. Rahao.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Maey : O mother; Naey : through name; Kio(n) visarai : may never forget.

O my mother! Pray that the Lord is never forgotten by me. The more I remember Him, the eternal Lord; the more He comes and resides in my heart.

Sachey nam ki til(u) vadiai.

Akh(i) thakey, kimat(i) nahi pai.

Je sabh(i) mil(i) kai akhan pahey.

Vada n hovai, ghat(i) n jaey.2

All the living beings are tired describing the glory of the Lord and yet have not been able to say even as much as a sesame seed. No one has been able to say who is equal to the Lord. If all the living beings of the world put their mind and intelligence together, it does not make Him any bigger than what He is. And if no one praises Him, it will in no way make Him smaller. He is not crazy of hearing adulations.

Na oh(u) marai, n hovai sog(u).

De(n)da rahai n chukai bhog(u).

Gun(u) eho hor(u) nahi koey.

N ko hoa na ko hoey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sog(u) : grief sorrow; N chukai : does not exhaust; Bhog(u) : distribution; Gun(u) eho : this is the greatness; Hoa : has ever existed; N hoey : will ever exist.

The Lord never dies. No one every feels grief for Him. He provides sustainence to the living beings. All His blessings and boons never exhaust with use. His greatness is that there is no one like Him. No one like Him has ever appeared nor will ever appear.

Jevad(u) ap(i) tevad teri dat(i).

Jin(i) din(u) kar(i) kai kiti rat(i).

Khasam(u) visareh te kamjat(i).

Nanak navai bajh sanat(i).

Meaning of Difficult Words : Jevad : big in size; Tevad : equal to that greatness; Jin(i) : He who, Visareh : forget; Te : those : persons; Kamjat(i) : of bad caste; Navai bajh(u) : without Lords name ; Sanat(i) : low, down caste.

O Lord; Your boons are as infinite as you are. You have created day and night. Hey Nanak! those people become low caste who forget Lord’s name of so many virtues. Those who are bereft of Lord’s name are of low birth and down caste.

Raag Gujri Mahalla – 4

Her(i) ke jan sat(i)gur sat purkha,

binao karao(n) gur pas(i).

Hum kirey kirm sat(i)gur sarnai,

kar(i) daya nam(u) pargas(i).

Meaning of Difficult Words: Her(i) ke jan : slave of the Lord; Binao : pray, Karao(n) : I do; Gur pas(i) : before the Guru; Kirey kirm : poor, helpless living beings / creatures; Pargas(i) : grant us the enlightenment.

O True Guru! O the Great Guru! I slave of the Lord-Satguru, pray before you. Please be kind and kindle the light of Lord’s name in my heart. O Satguru Ji! This helpless person has come to Your refuge.

Merey meet gurdev, mo kao Ram nam(u) pargas(i).

Gurmat(i) nam(u) mera pran sakhai

Her(i) keerat(i) hamr(i) rahras(i).1. Rahao.

Meaning of Difficult Word : Mo kao : in me; Gurmat(i) : obtained through the wisdom of the Guru; Pran sakhai : companion of life; Kirat(i) : praise, glorification; Rahras(i) : wealth to spend on the journey of life.

O my friend Guru! Grant me the light of Lord’s name. may the Lord’s name told by the wisdom of the Guru be the companion of my life. May the praise and glorification of Lord be the wealth for me to spend during the journey of my life.

Her(i) jan ke vad bhag vaderey

jin Her(i) Her(i) sardha, Her(i) pias.

Her(i) Her(i) nam(u) milai triptaseh,

mil(i) sangat(i) gun pargas(i).2

Meaning of Difficult Words : Triptaseh : are satiated; Mil(i) : meet them.

Those devotees of the Lord are highly fortunate who harbour devotion for the Lord’s name in their mind. They feel satiated from Maya as soon as they obtain Lords name. Virtues start residing in them when they join the holy Sangat of His beloveds.

Jin Her(i) Her(i) ras(u) nam(u) n paia

te bhagheen jam pas(i).

Jo sat(i)gur saran(i) sangat(i) nahi aey.

dhrig(u) jivey, dhrig(u) jives(i).3.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Dhirg(u) jivey : their living is damnable.

Those who have not enjoyed the relishment of Lord’s name, those who have not obtained Lord’s name, they are very unfortunate. Consider them seized by the Yums. The spiritual death remains hovering over their head. Those who do not come in the refuse of Guru; those who do not sit and join the holy congregation, their life is damnable. Their living is condemnable.

Jin Her(i) jan sat(i)gur sangat(i) pai,

tin dhur(i) mastak(i) likhia likhas(i).

Dhan dhan(u) satsangat(i) jit(u) Her ras(u) pargas(i).

Meaning of Difficult : Dhur(i) : by providence; Mastak(i) : On their forehead, in their fortune; Likhas : written; Jit(u) : through whom; Mil(i) jan : by meeting such persons, who are the servants of Lord.

Those servants of God who are fortunate to sit in the holy congregation of the Guru, carry divine writings in their lot from the house of Lord. Hey Nanak! commendable is that congregation, worthy of adulation is that Sangat that provide the divine pleasure and ecstasy. Where the Lord’s name come and reside in the mind through the company of Guru conscious people.

Raag Gujri Mahalla-5

Kahey re man chitveh(n) udam,

ja ahar(i) Her(i) jio paria.

Sail pather meh jant upaey,

ta ka rijak(u) agai kar(i) dharia.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Kahey : why? Chitveh(n) udam(u) : You worry and think of doing; (Guru Ji has advised not to worry and waste your energy but use your energy in doing constructive work to earn your livelihood). Ja ahar(i) : In the occupation of; Paria : you are engrossed; Sail : rocks; Ta ka : their; Agai : already.

O mind! the occupation in which God Himself is deeply involved for you, why do you keep thinking about it and remain in a worrisome state? The living beings that He has created in stones and rocks, have already been provided with their food before they are even born.

Merey madho ji, satsangat(i) miley su taria.

Gurparsad(i) param pad(u) paia

sukey kast haria.1.Rahao.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Madho Ji : O Lord; Parsad(i) : by His kindness; Parmpad(u) : supreme spiritual state; Kast : wood.

O my Lord! those men who sit in the Sangat of holymen, are freed from futile worries and suspicious. By the grace of Guru, those who obtained such a supreme spiritual state are like a piece of dry wood becoming green again.

Janan(i) pita lok sut banita,

koey n kis ki dharia.

Sit(i) sir(i) rijak(u) sambahey Thakur(u)

kahey man bhao karia.2.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Janan(i) : mother; Sut : son; Banita : wife; Dharia : support; Kis ki : none; Sir(i) : on the head; Sir(i) sir(i) : on every head; Sambahey : reaches.

O my mind! mother, father, son, wife are not anyones support. Why are you afraid? The sustainer Lord Himself reaches the sustainence to every living being.

Udey ud(i) avai sai kosa

tis(u) pachhai bachrey chharia.

Tin kavan(u) khalavai, kavan(u) chugavai,

man meh simran(u) karia.3.

Meanings of Difficult Words : Udey ud(i) : flying from far; Sai : hundreds, Tis(u) pachhai : behind those cranes; Bacharey : young ones; Chharia : are left behind; Chugavai : bird seeds; Simran(u) : recalls, remembers, keep in memory; Kavan(u) khalavai : who feeds them?

O my mind! Look! the cranes fly over hundreds of miles leaving their young one’s behind. No one is there to feed them. No one is there to serve them bird seeds. But that crane keep the young one’s in her mind and God turns this memory into a means of sustaining those birds.

Sabh(i) nidhan, das ast sidhan,

Thakur kart al dharia.

Jan Nanak bal(i) bal(i) sad bal(i) jaiai,

tera ant(u) n paravaria.4.5.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sabh(i) nidhan : all the treasures; Ast : eight; Dus ast : eighteen; Sidhan : miraculous powers; Kar tal : on the palm of the hands.

O sustaining Lord! The treasures of the entire world and all the eighteen miraculous powers rest on the palm of Your hand. Hey slave Nanak! be a sacrifice unto such a Lord and say, Hey Lord! no one can fathom the near and far end of Your expanse.

Raag Asa Mahalla – 4 So Purakh(u)

So purakh(u) Niranjan(u) Her(i) purakh(u) Niranjan(u)

Her(i) agma agam apara.

Sabh(i) dhiaveh sabh(i) dhiaveh tudh(u) ji

Her(i) sachey sirjan hara.

Meaning of Difficult Words : So : that; Purakh(u) : who is present in every body; Niranjan : unsoiled by Maya; Agam : beyond reach : Apara : whose beyond end cannot be known.

That God is present in all the living beings and yet is above the influence of Maya. He is unreachable and infinite. O Omnipotent and Omnipresent Lord! all the living beings remember You. They contemplate You in their mind.

Sabh jee tumarey ji, tun jeea(n) ka datara.

Her(i) dhiavauh santauh ji sabh(i) dukh visaranhara.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sabh(i) : all living beings; Visaran hara : destroyer; Datara : provider.

Hey God! All creatures are created by You. You are the provider of all the living beings. O saintly persons! focus Your mind on that Lord who is destroyer of all the griefs.

Her(i) apey Tkahur(u), Her(i) apey sewak ji,

kia Nanak jant vichara.1.

He is the master since He is present in all the creatures. He Himself is the servant. What existence do the creatures have without Him? Creatures exist because He is there in them.

Tun ghat ghat antar(i), sarb nirantar(i) ji,

Her(i) eko purakh(u) samana.

Ik(i) datey ik(i) bhekhari ji, sabh(i) terey choj vidana.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Ghat : body; Antar(i) : inside; Ghat ghat antar(i) : in every body; Nirantar(i) : uniformally; Eko : one and only one; Ik(i) : many living beings; Datey : donor; Bhekhari : beggars; Sabh(i) : all; Vidana : strange; Choj : spectacle.

O Lord! You are present in everybody. You are present uniformally and wholly in everyone. You are permitted in all. Yet many living beings are donors while some are beggars. These are all Your strange spectacles.

Tun apey data apey bhugata ji

hau(n) tudh(u) bin(u) avar(u) n jana.

Tun Parbrahm(u) beant(u) beant(u) ji,

terey kia gun akh(i) vakhana.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Bhugata : user, relisher; Akh(i) : by saying; Vakhana : I describe.

God Almighty is without any form. No vice can touch or influence Him. He needs no support or dependence. He is the beginning of the Cosmos. He is without colour and form. He does not take birth and is self effulgent. A foolish man boasts of knowing His intrinsic nature who has not been ever reached by such sages, scholars who have written many books of knowledge.

The beautiful and handsome Lord’s unparallel traits is living and behaving as a pauper and rich man even as a king/emperor. Ab rachha merit um karo.

Sikh ubar(i) asikh sangharo.

Dusht jitey uthwat utpata.

O Lord! please protect me. Save all those Sikhs and Your servants who tread on the path taught by You. Please destroy all those who do not follow Your teachings or those who impede others following them. All those with debased intelligence, who are cruel to mankind and barbarians be destroyed in the battlefield.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Simrit : religious books of Hinduism. These are 27 in number; Sastr : religious volumes of Hinduism which are six in number; Beyd : another set of four religious books of Hindu religion; Bheyd : mystry.

The Twenty seven Simritis, four Beyds and six Shastrs of Hinduism describes their faiths in many ways. O Great Lord! having taken Your refuge, no faith appealed to me.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Anand(u) : complete blooming in spirit; Sahaj seti : in a state of equipoise; Man(i) : in the mind, Vadhai : a song of soaring spirits; Paria(n) : the consorts of the Raags. (each Rag has five consorts); Rag rattan : melodious modes of singing.

O my mother! My heart is in complete bloom, because I have found the Guru. I have also achieved a state of equipoise, now that I have met with my Guru my instability has disappeared. The melodious songs of happiness are sounding in my mind. The melodious Rags have entered into my heart along with their consorts to sing the paeans of the Lord in my mind.

Sabdo ta gavauh Hari kera, man(i) jini vasaia.

Kahai Nanak(u) anand(u) hoa, Sat(i)guru mai(n) paia.1.

O brother! You too should sing the praises of the Lord. All those who have imbibed the word of Lord’s praise in their heart, experience a divine and complete blood in their mind. Nanak says that my heart is also in a state of ecstasy because I have met with the true Guru.

O my mind! Remain attached with the Lord. keep Him in Your memory. That Lord is allayer of all distresses. He is always there to help You. He is capable of granting you success in all your tasks.

O Eternal Master – the Lord! I pray for grant of happiness to my mind from Your door. But what is not there in Your house? You have everything, but he alone receives it whom You grant. Then that person settles Your praises in his mind as a result of which his heart too experiences happiness and joy.

Those in whose heart settles Your name, they start experiencing numerous melodies of Raags. They experience the same ecstasy and joy that one experiences on hearing the music of many instruments played melodiously.

Nanak Says! O Eternal Master! there is no dearth of anything in Your house. I request at Your door.

The Eternal name of the Lord has become my life support by His grace. The Lord’s name who has vanquished all my greed wants and desires, the name that has settled in my heart and is giving me peace and joy, that eternal Nam has become the support of my life.

I sacrifice myself unto my Guru because all these boons are His. Nanak says O Saints! Listen to the Guru’s Sabad and feel love for it. It is by the grace of Sat(i)guru that the eternal Nam of the Lord has become the support of my life.

Vajey panch sabad, tit(u) ghar(i) sabhagai.

Ghar(i) sabhagai, sabad vajey kala jit(u) ghar(i) dharia.

Panch dut tudh(u) vas(i) kitey kal(u) kantak(u) maria.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Vajey : souns; Panch sabad : tunes of five types of playing instruments; Tit(u) : in them; Tit(u) ghar(u) : in the mind; Sabhagai : fortunate ones; Kala : spiritual power; vigour; Jit(u) ghar(u) : in the mind; Dharia : You have bestowed; Panch dut : five vices; Kantak(u) : thorn; Kal kantak : fear of death.

The mind that You have blessed O Lord with spiritual power, it experiences the most melodious tunes of the five type of musical instruments. That heart experiences complete ecstasy. O Lord! his five vices come under his control. His fear of death vanishes from his mind.

Dhur(i) karm(i) paia tudh(u) jin kao

se nam(i) Her(i) kai lagey.

Kahai Nanak(u) tah such(u) hoa,

Meaning of Difficult Words : Dhur(i) : from providence; Karm(i) : by the grace; Se : those people: Anhad : sound of music without playing of any instrument.

Only those people assemble in the meditation of Lord’s name, who have it written in their lot by the providence. Nanak says – that mind experiences joy and tranquility. It experiences perpectual sound of melodious music.

Anad(u) sunauh vadbhagiho, sagal manorath purey.

Parbrahm(u) Prabh paia, utarey sagal visurey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Manorath : wanderings of my minds; Visurey : worries, tribulations.

O fortunate ones! Listen, the joy is that all wanderings of the mind disappear in that state. All aims and objectives are fulfilled. Lord is realized in the mind. All worries and tribulations are destroyed.

Dukh rog santap utarey, suni sachi bani.

Sant sajan bhaey sarsey, purey gur te jani.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Santap : griefs; Sachi bani : The eternal praise of the Lord; Sarsey : full of ecstasy; Gur te : from the Guru.

Listening to the panygerics of the Lord removes all griefs and tribulations. Those who learn to share / associate with the paeans of the Lord, their minds bloom.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sat(i)gur rahia bharpurey : the true Guru is complete in his word, the bani is the form of Guru/Lord; Turey : sounded.

All those who recite or listen to the bani become pure and pious. They see Satguru in this bani.

Nanak prays that those who come to the refuge of the Guru, they experience perpectual ecstasy. They experience spiritual pleaure in them.

The Characteristics of Spiritual Pleasures : A person who experiences spiritual pleasure, his wanderings end. All his worries vanish. No griefs, distress or tribulation comes anywhere near him. This state of ecstasy is obtained from the bani of Satguru Ji. Those who sing and hear this bani raise the status of their life. They see Satguru present in this bani.

Thal vich(i) tin(i) vastu paio, sat(u) santokh vicharo.

Amrit nam(u) Thakur ka paio, jis ka sabhs(u) adharo.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Thal vich(i) : the platter in the shape of Gur Granth Sahib; Tin(i) vastu : three articles; Amrit : blesser of spiritual life; Jis ka : whose; Sabhs(u) : every living being; Adharo : support.

O brother! the platter in the form of Guru Granth Sahib contains three items; namely high morality, contentment and understanding of spiritual life. It also contains Lord’s name that grants one with spiritual life. its support is essential for everyone.

Je ko khavai je ko bhunchai, tis ka hoey udharo.

Eh vast(u) taji nah jai, nit nit rakh(u) uridharo.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Ko : any person; Bhunchai : relishes; Tis ka : that persons’s; Udharo : emancipated from vices; Eh Vast(u) : this item that grants happiness; Taji nah jai : cannot be forsaken, Rakh(u) : preserve it; Ur(i) : in the heart; Dharo : settle it there.

If this spiritual diet is consumed and relished by a person perpetually, that person is saved from the effect of vices.

If one needs spiritual emancipation, then this item that provides spiritual happiness cannot be forsaken. Keep it well guarded in your mind.

Tam sansar(u) charn lag(i) tariai

sabh(u) Nanak Brahm pasaro.1.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Tam : darkness; Lag(i) : by associating with it; Brahm pasaro : expanse of the Lord.

Hey Nanak! One can cross the dark worldly ocean of vices by joining at the feet of the Lord through these blessed articles. Then one sees the divine effulgence of the Lord everywhere.

Slok Mahalla – 5

Tera kita jato nahi, maino jog(u) kitoi.

Mai(n) nirguniarey ko gun(u) nahi apey tars(u) paioi.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Kita : all good turns done; Jato nahi : not realised its import; Kitoi : you have made me; Jog(u) : capable, fir to acknowledge the blessing, that you have showered on one.

Hey Nanak! say, that O Lord! I can never realise the import of all Your blessings. To acknowledge and take care of all those blessings, You have made me a suitable person. I am without any qualities and bereft of all traits. You Yourself took pity upon me.

Tars(u) paia mihramat(i) hoi

Sat(i)gur(u) sajjan(u) milia.

Nanak, nam milai ta(n) jivan

tan(u) man(u) thivai haria.1.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Mihramat(i) : clemency, compassion; Milai : is obtained; Jivan : I have spiritual life; Thivai : it turns into; Haria : faithful.

O Lord! clemency and compassion came to Your mind, You took pity on me and I came to the refuge of a friend Guru. I cannot forget this boon that you have bestowed upon me. Now O dear Guru whenever I obtain Your Nam, I feel spiritual life in me. My body and mind blooms with the boon of that spiritual life.


SOHILA

Sohila is the name of this bani and it contains five Shabad. This bani is remembered by three names; Sohila, Kirtan Sohila and Arti Sohila. In the index of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, this bani is mentioned as Sohila Mahalla-1. As the name Rahras(i) came into being with So-dar(u) at a later time; similarly the other two names seems to have come into use after the compilation of Sri Adi Granth Sahib. The title of bani is Sohila perhaps because of the use of this word Sohila in the very first hymn of this bani. This word is indicative of Lords praise. Therefore the authentic name of this bani is Sohila. It is recorded in Gian Ratnavali that – recite Rahras(i) in the evening; then sing Kirtan and recite Sohila at night.

Because Kirtan followes the recitation of So-dar(u) in most Gurudawaras, thus the word Kirtan became an epithet with Sohila making it Kirtan Sohila.

Rati kirat sohila kar Arti Prasad vandandey.

(Bhai Gurdas Ji)

As regards the name Arti Sohila, it is because of the hymn Gagan mein thal(u) Rav(i) Chand……. that forms part of this bani.

Bhai Gurdas Ji has used this word in the following line of his Vaar 26/4.

Rati Arti Sohila maya vich(i) udas rahaia.

This bani completes the recitation of banis that the Sikhs are required to read on daily basis. This bani is recited at night just before retiring to bed for sleep. Making a standing supplication after the recitation of Sohila bani has not been adopted in the code and this seems right in view of the time of its recitation. After recitation of this bani one should avoid aimless talk or gossip as it disturbs the determination of rising at early hours of the morning.

This bani is also recited after the cremation of the dead body of a person.

This bani has only five Shabads. The size of this daily recitation bani has been kept small as a person is tired after the days work, and his senses become inactive. The sleep also over powers after the evening meal. Thus a house holder can obtain necessary spiritual strength from its small size and can concentrate his mind for a short period.

The first Shabad is the composition of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He has explained to us that no one is going to stay in this world for ever. Everyone is destined to die at a pre-determined time. Therefore one should remember Lord and sing His praises all the time.

The second hymn describes the individuals nature of God. It is explained that He is a complete unit and is only One, although there are many books of wisdom and knowledge that describe Him.

In the third hymn, the traditional Arti performed with lit lamps in a plate by Hindus before the idol of god has been rejected by Guru Nanak. He has explained that the real Arti is being performed all the time by the nature in the Universe. To live life in His will is the true Arti.

In the forth hymn, Guru Ram Das Ji has taught us how to do supplication before the mighty Lord. It has been emphasized that Lord’s name alone can save us from the effect of vices.

In the fifth hymn, Guru Arjan Dev Ji jolts a human mind and says that he should complete the task for which he had come to this world. Such pious sermon creates such a superb feeling in the mind, then he prays for uniting him with Sat(i) Sangat and seek the dust of their feet.

Antarjami purakh bidhatey sardha man ki purey.

Nanak das(u) ihai sukh(u) ma(n)gai

mokao kar(i) santan ki dhurey.


SOHILA

Rag Gaurhi Deepaki, Mahalla – 1

Ik Oankar Sat(i)gur Prasad(i).

Meaning of Difficult Words : Jai Ghar(i) : in the house, in the Satsangat; Kirat(i) : panegyrics; Akhiai : is said; Tit(u) ghar(i) : in that house of Satsang.

The Satsang where the panegyrics of the Lord are sung, the traits of the Lord are contemplated upon; O life you too should go to that Santsang and sing, the adulatiosn of the Lord. Remember the Lord who has given you this life.

Tum gavauh merey nirbhao ka Sohila.

Hau vari jit(u) Sohilai sada such(u) hoey.1.Rahao.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sohila : nuptial songs.

Note: At the time of marriage of a girl, many women of the neighbourhood assemble at night and sing songs related to the marriage. These songs express a theme of separation with her parents and friends. It also contain blessings of all, that she may live a life of peace and comfort in her husband’s house. These songs are called Sohilrha.

Vari : sacrifice unto (a term of endearment); Jit : sohilai : as a result of that Sohila.

O life! join the holy congregation of Satsangis and sin the peans of the Fearless God. I am sacrifice unto those hymns of praise of the Lord that always bestow peace and comfort to a person.

Nit nit jiarhey samalian dekhaiga devan(u)har(u).

Terey danai kimat(i) n pavai,

tis(u) datey kavan(u) sumar(u).2.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Nit : always, for ever; Samalian : are taken care of; Dekhaiga : will take care; Danai Kimat(i) : value of blessings; Sumar : estimate, count.

O my dear life! the Master whose presence is taking care of everyone, He the blesser of all our needs is taking care of everyone. All His blessings are invaluable and beyond your ability to count. What guess or estimate can you make of that Mighty Lord. that provider Lord is infinite.

Sambat(i) saha likhia, mil(u) kar(i) pavauh teyl(u).

Deh(u) sajjan asisarhia(n) jio hovai sahib sio meyl(u).3.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sambat(i) : year; Saha : the day of marriage; Mil(i) kar : together; Asisarhia(n) : blessings.

Note: There is a custom that is held about two days before the actual marriage when the young bride to be is blessed and prayed for a happy life by her aunts and other elder ladies of the house beside her friends. Her hair and body is massaged with oil.

O my life! when you go to satsang, make supplication before the Lord because that dy and year is pre-decided when I shall be receiving the letter of invitation to go to the land of my husband. O my dear compansions of Satsang, put oil in my hair and sing songs of blessing so that I am able to meet my husband – Lord.

Ghar(i) ghar(i) eho pahucha sadrhey nit pavann(i).

Sadanhara simriai, Nanak se deh avann(i).4.1.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Ghar(i) ghar(i) : in every house; Pahucha : are reaching; Pavann(i) : are received; Sadrhey : calls, invitation; Se deh : that day; Avann(i) : come.

This letter of call / invitation to go to the land hereafter is reaching ever house off and on. This call is taking place regularly. We should always remember that Master-Lord who sends us these calls because, Hey Nanak! our day is also fixed and drawing near.

Gist : In this hymn, life like girl has been explained that she should sing and listen to the nuptial songs in a Satsang. Satsang is a place where the young maids are prepared for the ultimate marriage. The companions of the Satsang bless and wish well for each other. They pray that she who is about to depart for the land hereafter may meet her husband – Lord.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Chhey : six; Ghar(i) : holy hooks; (Sankh, Niyaey; Vaisheshak, Yog, Mimansa and Vedant). Gur(u) : the writers of these six books; (Gautam, Kanad, Patanjali, Jaimini and Vyas); Updes : teachings, principles; Gur(u) gur(u) : God; Eko : one only; Veys : form.

These are six holy books of religious philosophy written by six sages. These books contain six teachings and principles. But all these philosophical principles are describing form of One God differently. These are in the form of His effulgence.

Baba jai ghar(i) kartey kirat(i) hoey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Baba : O wise brother; Jai ghar(i) : in that place of Satsang; Kartey Kirat(i) : praises of the Creator; Rakh(u) : save; Toey : your; Vadai : goodness.

O wise brother! hold that place (Satsang) close to your heart where paeans of the Lord are sung. Enjoy its refuge. Your goodness lies in it.

Visvey chasia gharhia pahra, thiti vari mah(u) hoa.

Suraj(u) eko, rut(i) anek, Nanak kartey ke ketey veys.2.2.

(15 blinks of the eye : 1 visa; 12 Visuey : 1 chasa; 30 chasey : 1 pal; 60 pals : 1 ghari; 7 ½ Ghari : 1 pahar; 8 pahar : 1 day and night; 15 thit : 7 days; 12 months : 6 seaons.

As there are visuas, chasas, pal, ghari, pahar, days, thits, months, year and seasons, their creator is Sun which is one only. All these are different form of expansion of the Sun. Similarly all these philosophies and their principles are various forms of God.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Gagan mai(n) : the entire sky, in the form of sky; Rav(i) : Sun; Janak : as if; Malianlo : the breeze coming from Malay mountain; (The Malay mountains have thick growth of Sandal wood trees. Therefore the breeze blowing from Malay mountain is full of fragrance.); Sagal : all; Banraey : vegetation; Phulant : flowering; Joti : O effulgent Lord.

The whole sky is a platter. The Sun and the Moon are the two beacons placed in that platter. The stars are the jewels placed in that platter. The frangrance air of Malay mountain is like burning of joss-stick. The entire vegetation of the Universe is providing the flowers for the worship of the Effulgent Lord.

Kaisi arti hoey. Bhav khandna teri arti.

Anhata sabad, vajant bheri.1.Rahao.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Bhav khandna : destroyers of birth and death cycle; Anhata : that sounds without actually playing / striking it; Shabad : way of life; Bheri : drums.

O the destroyer of birth and death cycle of the living beings. What a beautiful arti is being performed before You in the nature! Your energy is flowing in every living being as if the drums are sounding for Your arti.

Sahas tav nain, nun main heh tohey kao

Sahas pad bimal, nun ek pad(u) gandh bin(u)

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sahas : thousands; Tav : Yours; Nun : non; Murat(i) : forms; Nana : not there; Tohi : Your; Pad : feet; Bimal : clean; Gandh : nose; Chalat : wonderful play.

You are present in all the living beings. Therefore You have thousands of eyes. But being Formless, You have no eye at all. Thousands of forms are Yours yet You have no form at all. You have thousands of beautiful feet, but being a formless (Nirakar) You have no feet. You have thousands of noses, yet You have no nose, beign formless. Such wondrous play by You have amazed me.

Sabh meh jot(i) jot(i) hai soey.

Tis dai chanan(i) sabh meh chanan(u) hoey.

Gur sakhi jot(i) pargat(u) hoey.

Jo tis(u) bhavai su arti hoey.3.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Jot(i) : light, effulgene; Soey : the Lord; Tis dai chanan : by His light; Sakhi : teachings.

The light of the Lord is effulgent in all the living beings. All of them are alive and conscious as a result of that effulgence. But the knowledge of this light divine is obtained by the teachings of a Guru. It is Guru’s teachings by which we realise that one light pervades in lal. The most idel Arti of such a divine light is to accept as good and beneficial what ever is His will. To live in His will is to do His arti.

Her(i) charn ka(n)wal makrand, lobhit mano,

andino mohey ahi piasa.

Kripa jal(u) deh(i) Nanak sarang kao,

hoey ja te terai naey vasa.4.3.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Makrand : the nectar of the flowers; Andino : every day. Ja te : by which; Terai naey : in Your name.

O Lord! my mind longs for the nectar of Your lotus like feet. I feel thirsty for this elixir every day. Plese grant this rain bird Nanak the drop of water for which he is always longing and running from place to place, so that I remain settled in Your name.

Rag Gaurhi Purabi Mahalla – 4

Kam(i) krodh(i) nagar(u) bauh bharia

mil(i) sadhu khandal khanda hey.

Purab(i) likhat likhey gur(u) paia

man(i) Her(i) liv mandal manda hey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Kam(i) : lust; Krodh(i) : in anger; Nagar(u) : body; Mil(i) : in the company of; Sadhu : Guru; Khandal khanda : is destroyed; Purab(i) : in the past; Purab(i) likhat likhey : according to the past deeds; Mandal manda : engrossed in.

This town like body of a man remains filled with lust and anger. Those vices can be destroyed only by the teachings of a Guru. He who is blessed by his good deeds of previous birth meets a Guru, he acquires attachment of his mind with the Lord. This destroys the influence of lust and such like other ill traits.

Kar(i) anjuli pun(u) vada hey.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Anjuli : both hands joined to form a cup; Pun(u) : good deed; Dandaot(i) : salutation by lying prostrate on face.

Hey Brother! do anjuli before God. It is a good deed. Fall prostrate before Guru, it is a noble deed.

Sakat Her(i) ras sad(u) n jonia,

tin antar houmai kanda hey.

Jio jio chaleh chubhai dukh(u) paveh

jamkal(u) saheh(i) sir(i) danda hey.2.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Sakat : persons detached from God; Sad : enjoyment; Tin antar(i) : in them, in their mind; Chaleh : tread; Chubhai : pricks; Jam kal(u) : spiritual death; Sir(i) : on their head.

Those who are detached from the Lord, cannot appreciate the enjoyment of Lord’s name. They seem to have been pricked by a thorn of arrogance and pride. As they tread the path of egoistic life, they feel its pain. They face distress and bear the blow of the club of spiritual death. The spiritual death keeps hovering over their head.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Nam(i) : in the name; Samaney : engrossed; Bhav : world; Khanda hey : has destroyed; Sobh : adores; Khand brahmanda : in the entire world.

Those who love the Lord, remain engrossed in His name all the time. Their tribulations of birth and death are destroyed in this world. They realise the eternal and universal God. They are adored in all corners of the world and universe.

Hum garib maskin Prabh terey,

Her(i) rakh(u) rakh(u) vad vada hey.

Jan Nanak nam(u) adhar(u) tek hai,

Her(i) namey hi sukh(u) manda hey.4.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Maskin : humble, meek; Rakh(u) : please protect us; Adhar(u) : support; Namey : in the Nam; Manda : receives.

Hey Lord! we are humble beggars at Your door. You are the magnificient support. Please save me from these vices of lust, anger etc. O Lord! Your slave Nanak is dependent upon Your name alone. Your nam is my support. True comfort and happiness is attained from Your Nam.

Gist : The eternal peace of obtained by shedding ego and meditating on Lord’s name.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Karao(n) : I do; Sunauh : listen; Bela : time; Iha(n) : in this life; Khat(i) : earn; Laha : gain; Agai : in the world hereafter; Basan(u) : living life; Suhela : easy.

O my friends! Listen! I pray that now is the time of serving the Guru conscious, God loved persons. If you serve them, you will earn the wealth of Lord’s name that will make your life easy to live in the world hereafter.

Audh ghatai dinas(u) raina re

Man Gur mil(i) kaj swarey.1.Rahao.

Meanings of Difficult Words : Audh : age; Rain : night; Man : O mind; Mil(i) : meeting; Swarey : set them right.

O my mind! the life is reducing with every passing day and night. So meet the Guru and make a success of this human life.

Ih(u) sansar(u) bikar sansey meh

Jiseh jagaey piavai ih(u) ras(u)

akath katha tin(i) jani.2.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Bikar : filled with vices; Sansey meh : in doubts; Jiseh : that man; Jagaey : wakes up; Piavai : makes him drink; Tin(i) : to him.

This world is filled with vices and evil deeds. The living beings are drowning in various doubts and suspicious. He alone escapes from the shackles of those vices who has established his rapport and relationship with God. When God Himself wakes up that person who is sleeping in the world of vices and evils and makes him drink the elixir of Nam-Amrit, he then learns to sing paens and panegyrics of the in describable and inaccessible Lord.

Ja kao aey, soi bihajhauh, Her(i) gur te maneh basera

Nij ghar(i) mahal(u) pavauh such sahjey

bauhar(i) n hoeygo phera.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Ja kao : the purpose / aim for which; Bihajauh : trade in; Maneh : in the mind; Nij ghar(i) : in one’s mind; Mahal : the place of the Lord; Sahajey : in spiritual equipoise; Bauhar(i) : then.

O brother! trade in the commodity for which you have come to this world. The Lord’s name can only dwell in the mind through the blessings of Guru. If you take the refuge of Guru, you will realise God within you through the spiritual ecstasy and equipoise. There will be no cycle of birth and death.

Antarjami purakh bidhatey, sardha man ki purey.

Nanak das(u) ihai sukh(u) mangai

mo kao kar(i) santan ki dhurey.4.5.

Meaning of Difficult Words : Antarjami : knower of all the hearts; Purakh(u) : O present in everyone; Bidhata : creator; Purey : may fufil; Mangai : requests for; Mo kao : to me; Dhurey : dust of the feet.

O Lord – knower of all the hearts; O Universal Creator; fulfill my hearts desire. Your slave Nanak requests You that I may be made the duct of the holy feet of saints.


A Shake Up

O Sikhs! do what ever you like, your Guru shall never feel happy with you. I have read your history. I have also read translation of your Gurbani what ever I could lay my hands on. I have read much about your religion; as much as you perhaps have not yourself. I am telling you the truth, we spread our religion in the entire world on the strength of one Jesus Christ have been put on the cross. But your history is replete with thousands Christs. Which other religion of the world can claim to have its leaders martrayed through torture of being boiled in hot water? Or made to sit on hot plates? Which lover of a religion had his joints cut one by one, and even sawed into two? The followers of which religion had raised their voice and arms to fight injustice, tyranny and oppression by forming small bands of fighters with virtually coffin on their heads? Is there any religio in the world whose leader had his two young ones buried alive in the walls? What a God’s wrath! Only five hundred years old history and that too written in blood! And imagine when Gurbani professes love and service of humanity and fellow beings, you sing the songs of love and do not shirk raising arms against cruelty and oppression. What a strange religion it is that to establish justice you don’t even hesitate to lay down your life. You have hidden such an unparalleled and not to be found history in just 20 million hearts. Perhaps even less because I am sure the modern educated Sikhs do not even narrate these episodes to their children. And less informed rural elders may be inadvertenly adding falsehood in it. The chasm between belief and blood faith is very wide. O friend, belief demands a ray of knowledge. Outside knowledge is only blind faith, doubts and superstitions and it keeps getting adulterated. What have you done to check and arrest it?

We have distributed millions of copies of Bible free of cost or have charged very nominal cost. I have heard that SGPC, the governing and administrative body of your Gurudawaras has annual income running into many millions. You should use some money to translate Gurbani in various languages and distribute it. Translate your Sikh history in many languages and distribute its copies free to the world for others to know and realise what you are. Haven’t we printed Bible in all Indian languages including Punjabi? I have heard that you people have not even reached your Sikh history in every house of your community. How ungrateful are you towards your Gurus and your martyrs! An ungrateful person has no place other than hell. All you Sikhs will go to hell. O wretched people! I worry that you will even make hell over crowded.

These are the words that a paster had said to a Sikh statesman in London. There is nothing false in what he has said. Our leadership, Shiromani Committee and Akali Dal is sleeping over their responsibility of spreading knowledge of Sikhism through literature. Sikhs have no press, no daily paper and no platform of their own. All of them have to depend upon those writings which are passed on to us with all their adulterations.

The entire leadership of the community has fallen so deep into the gorge and quagmire of politics that they have no time to think about preaching the truth.

SGPC has so far printed books which can be counted on finger tips. They do not seem to have paid any attention towards printing literature and distributing it free of cost. Perhaps they think that it is inappropriate and unreasonable work that should be done by some other organization.

Sikh Missionary College of Ludhiana has printed above 300 small tracts on various aspect of Sikh religion. These are reached to the people at very nominal cost through raising temporary stalls at various places during key functions. All workers of the College are volunteer preachers who earn their living through other professions and pursuits. They even give their Daswandh (one tenth of their earnings) to the college to enable it meet its essential expenditures. College has not fixed income by way of offerings in a Gurudwara, proprety or from any other source which can be used for printing literature for free distribution. We firmly believe that unless appropriate literature is reached to a common seeker, the Sikh community will not wake up. That hunger to know Sikh history, understand the invaluable sermons of Gurbani and rich Code of Conduct cannot be created without reaching and motivating a Sikh. Today, a Sikh is ready to spend money on futile articles of the house, he can take out enough money from his budget for a bottle of liquor, he can throw lavish parties for his friends, but is not prepared to spend even a penny on Sikh literature, history books and even expositions of Gurbani. All the same a programme of free distribution of useful literature has been worked out by the college on order to generate hunger for knowledge.

Therefore, we place a humble request before liberal and charitable Sikhs to subscribe to the project with open heart. Every well wisher of the Panth should send at least ten rupees. This is the first appeal made by the organizers of Sikh Missionary College. We are highly hopeful of a good response. Sikhs who donate monetary help will also motivate others to do like wise. The monetary help extended will only be used for distribution of free literature and a separate account will be maintained. Free literature for distribution will be sent whenever desired by Sangat. All those well wishers of the Sikh Panth who feels the inadequacy of preaching or wish to prove the London padre wrong, should send assistance for free literature on regular basis. All associates of Sikh Missionary College, circle incharge and independently operating well wishers of the Panth are strongly requested to collect money in the area of their influence and send it every month to ‘Free Literature Fund’.


ALWAYS REMEMBER

1. Other than Guru Granth Sahib, do not accept any living Guru. Bow only before Guru Granth Sahib and no one else.

2. God alone is the creator, sustainer and destroyer of the Universe. Brahma, Vishnu or Shiva are not some separate forces.

3. Sikh must visit Gurudwara only. He will not go to Mandir, Masjid or Church.

4. Sikh will not worship any idol. To adore my idol or photography with garland burning of incense stisks etc is prohibited in Sikhism. No pictures of Guru Sahib should be made. The pictures is circulation are not the actual pictures of Guru Sahib.

5. No sikh will go to attend ‘Jagrata’ of any goddess.

6. Abstain from movies because these obscene scenes. Visit to circus, wrestling, games, athletic meet is not prohibited.

7. Sikh must write their names with ‘Singh’ and ‘Kaur’ as applicable after their names.

8. Sikh will not use any type of intoxicant like (liquor, opium, etc.).

9. Sikh will maintain no relationship with anti Sikh elements like Radha Soami, Nakli Nirankaries, Namdharies or other who promote living Guru cult.

10. Sikh is prohibited to visit Ganges or any other place of pilgrimage of Hindus.

11. Accept no Kanjak for Sikh girls.

12. Sikh will not roam about bare headed in the bazaar nor will he come out of his house without covering his head. Use turban or Chuni as applicable all the time.

13. Sikh ladies will not keep fast on any occasion, Fasting on Karva Chauth, Pooranmashi, Amavas is apostacy and anti Gurmat.

14. Sikh will not hold Sharadh nor will he take part in it.

15. All days are auspicious for a Sikh. Sangrand, Amavas or Pooranmashi have no special piety attached to them. Thes are as good as any other day.

16. Greet each other with ‘Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh’.

17. Keep booklets of Gurbani with respect wrapped in kerchiefs.

18. Don’t rush when reading Gurbani. Read with concentration, deliberately and with affection.

19. A Sikh must rise at Ambrosial hour (2-3 hours before sun rise).

20. Don’t rush to receive Karha Parshad or Langar.

21. Don’t press the legs of small cot on which Guru Granth Sahib is placed. Don’t rub your nose or forehead on plotforms/memorials. Don’t keep water under the cot of Guru Granth Sahib.

22. No one should sit with cushions on their back in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

23. Don’t add your own composition with Gurbani hymns while singing.

24. Only one thing should be observed in Sangat at one time. Keertan or Path or lecture.

25. Don’t keep pitcher, coconut, cereals, beacon, etc. during Akand Path. Don’t read any other Bani when Akand Path is in progress.

26. Distribute the Karha Parshad share of Panj Piaras in the Sangat. Then take out the share of the Sikh attending to the Granth Sahib.
